DLP® Technology has been shipped into over 18 million units of Digital Cinemas, HDTVs, and Digital Projectors. Now, the DLP chip is being made available for applications that use ultraviolet (UV) light. While other spatial light modulators have been announced for use with UV applications, the DLP chip is the only spatial light modulator that is in high volume production and offers some amount of reliability with different wavelengths of UV light.
Some of the applications that can utilize digital projection of UV and Deep UV light include:
- Phototherapy – treatment of skin conditions with UV light
- PCB Maskless Lithography – manufacturing of PC boards without using expensive masks, also known as direct imaging
- Maskless Analog Semiconductor Lithography - down to .2um feature size
- High Speed Ablation – for applications like micro machining and deep etching
- TFT LCD Manufacturing - specifically yield enhancement and lithography
- Stereolithography - Rapid prototyping for producing parts with high accuracy
 Direct imaging, or maskless lithography, of products like semiconductors and PC boards has significant advantages in terms of cost savings and flexibility compared to traditional lithography, where masks are used to image patterns onto photoresist. The topic of maskless lithography has been around for years, but early generations of maskless lithography machines, which use a “flying” laser spot, have not been able to match the throughput and the critical feature size of traditional machines, at the same time. DLP® Technology offers a way to project ultraviolet light digitally so that it is no longer necessary to trade-off flexibility of quick product changes, manufacturing speed, and critical feature size.
