Design Considerations

The typical Wired IP Phone is a compact, all-in-one desktop phone that allows free person-to-person calls anywhere in the world over a broadband IP connection. Adding video functionality allows users to use video conferencing from their desk. The future in IP communications systems will integrate PBX phone systems, audio/video conferencing bridges, data collaboration, and IM servers seamlessly across one platform. As IP network deployments continue to grow, consumers are looking for additional features and integration of video streaming capabilities in a cost-effective fashion.

TI's high-performance, DSP-based IP video phone solutions enable a number of features including:

  • Real-time multichannel video integration to existing IP voice phones
  • Three-way video conferencing
  • Real-time synchronization of video with voice across IP networks.

Additional DSP MIPS are also available for integration of other features and processing requirements. TI's TMS320C64x™ generation of DSPs execute at clock speeds of 600 MHz, providing an optimal solution with headroom left over for incorporating new features.

TI's TMS320DM3x™ processors are powered by an ARM9 core and a video processing subsystem (VPSS). Optimized for portable and other low power consumption HD video products. Doubles battery life of today's HD products.

TI's POE solution reliably provide, the standard 48V, 15W (13W load), as well as up to 25W for high power POE, to the devices connected to the Ethernet cables. The core Power Source Equipment (PSE) Controller detects, classifies, and supplies (PD detection algorithm) power to the devices at the other end of the Ethernet cable, while the Microcontroller controls and monitors the PoE ports and power supply unit. Manufacturing costs can even be saved by using TI's TPS2375 PoE part and sell the AC adaptor separately.

TI offers touch-screen controller solutions like the TSC2117 with integrated ESD protection, headphone and speaker amplifier. The TSC2117 achieves low power consumption and are immune to vibration and display noise; small-footprint packages are available. Touch screen functionality can also be leveraged when needing room for a bigger display.

Integrating crystal clear audio conferencing demands improved audio features such as multi-band equalizers and echo/noise cancellation while maintaining low power consumption. Newer generation TI audio codecs, such as the TLV320AIC3254 process sound with better audio quality and longer battery life. Class-D amplifiers continue to increase in popularity because of their efficiency and their small-footprint packages.
