Design Considerations

The two main functions of a biometrics system are storing and comparing. The systems must have access to your information before it can use it can compare and verify the print, so without memory, a scanner has very limited capability. The storing process differs between different systems, as some systems store a great deal more information and will digitize and compress the information.

Once the print information is stored in an accessible database, a user's prints can be compared whenever the system is accessed. you are authenticated when both the stored and user's print match. Finger print readers use this uniqueness to generate a code - rarely do they actually use the full print for identification - based on areas where print lines merge, form, or loop like the round "whirl" that you can find in the middle of all finger prints.

Most readers work by scanning the print by illuminating it with a light source – either a laser or, more commonly, a LED (Light Emitting Diode, the capturing it with either a CCD Imager or the less expensive CMOS. The system processes and generates the code to catalog the print.

Finger prints can be covered by callus or worn smooth from heavy use or dirt can get into the print lines and skin can peel, which makes print reading more difficult. It is important to have rapid access to all stored prints so that multiple prints don't get associated to the same code. New technologies are looking to scan the subsurface of your fingerprint – down several layers of skin deep – which should work even when the print is scuffed or dirty.

The Fingerprint Biometric System uses TI DSP technology, coupled with identification (1:n) and authenication (1:1) software and a fingerprint sensor. TI has partnered with a number of third parties to provide software that enables a variety of TI DSPs on a number of popular fingerprint sensors on the market today such as Authentec, FingerPrint Cards and Atmel. TI DSP solutions support biometric software from a number of vendors, including 123id, Bioscrypt and Fingerprint Cards among others.
