Design Considerations

The DVD Player is a video/audio subsystem that decodes the MPEG-2 encoded movie and converts it into standard video signals (Composite Video, S-Video, Component Video). The player also decodes the AC-3 audio stream.

Core Subsystem include:

  • Analog Front End/DVD Drive - uses the DSP and microcontroller to perform readout and servo processing.
  • MPEG-2/AC-3 Decoder - uses the DSP to decode MPEG-2 Video and AC-3 Audio.
  • CPU - controls the DVD player operating system software and the user interface.
  • Memory - stores executing code and data/parameters.
  • Video Interface - provides video output with different formats: NTSC/PAL, S video, and YPrPb component video. The output stages require high-performance op-amps to amplify the video signall.
  • Audio Interface - allows audio to be digitized by the audio converter and processed by the DSP to provide high-quality audio for MPEG/AC3 requirements.
  • User Interface - allows the user to control the DVD player using the panel keypad or the remote control.
  • Power Conversion - converts the input power from the AC adaptor to run various functional blocks.
