Design Considerations

A USB Speaker is a speaker that relies on one connection (a USB connection from your PC) to provide both audio and power to the listener. Streaming audio is sent via the USB interface and power is provided through the USB connection.

The Core Subsystems include:

  • USB DAC
    - the DAC communicates with a PC it is connected to and converts the streaming audio into analog format for amplification and driving the speaker.
  • Audio Power Amplifier
    - the audio amplifier provides the power amplification to drive the speaker. Class-D audio amplifiers use a very power efficient technology versus traditional amplifiers. This allows more output power from a given power supply.
  • Amplifier Monitor (SVS)
    - USB power requirements specify compliance to a maximum of 5V and 500mA. In order to prevent the amplifier from trying to source more power, a monitoring/feedback circuit is implemented to reduce the output power from the audio amplifier.
