Design Considerations

The wireless mouse is becoming an omnipresent accessory to notebook and desktop PC users.

A wireless mouse design must be implemented with a strategy of maintaining a high-performance system while keeping power consumption to an optimum level to prolong battery life. Current hot trends in mice like the nano dongle fuel the need for small integrated circuit solutions.

TI's solution using the CC2510Fx/CC2511Fx is a true low-cost 2.4GHz system-on-chip (SoC) designed for low power wireless applications. The CC2510Fx/CC2511Fx combines the excellent performance of the state-of-the-art RF transceiver CC2500 with an industry-standard enhanced 8051 MCU, up to 32 kB of in-system programmable flash memory and 4 kB of RAM, and many other powerful features. The small 6x6 mm package makes it very well suited for wireless mouse application.

The CC2510Fx/CC2511Fx is highly suited for systems where very low power consumption is required. This is ensured by several advanced low-power operating modes, thus drawing very low currents. The 8051 Microcontroller core (built-in) is a high performance low power block as well.

The CC2511Fx adds a full-speed USB controller - Interfacing to a PC using the USB interface is quick and easy, and the high data rate (12 Mbps) of the USB interface avoids the bottlenecks of RS-232 or low-speed USB interfaces.

TI's solution for the power blocks that surround the core RF SOC - namely LDO on the transmit side (to step down the voltage from the USB 5V) and Boost converter on the receive side are of ultra low power consumption and small footprint thus optimizing the overall system for performance, power and size.
