Texas Instruments ZigBee stack, Z-Stack, includes a feature which enables upgrades of firmware over a ZigBee network. This feature is very useful if e.g. a large set of nodes has been installed and an additional feature is added. This feature removes a lot of the costs usually associated with upgrading nodes that have already been deployed.

This feature is also often used by developers for updating nodes with new software during development and field trials.

The Over the Air Download (OAD) kit consists of a board with flash memory which is used to store the new software image during download. Once the images have been fully downloaded the OAD feature in the Z-Stack will upgrade the node. This ensures for a safe update procedure.

The OAD EMK can be used the following CC2430 boards:

CC2430DB (CC2430 Demonstration Board)

SmartRF04EB with CC2430EM (Included in all CC2430 DKs and ZDKs)

SOC_BB (Battery Board used in CC2431DK and CC2431ZDK)
