White Paper: Coin cells and peak current draw

Designers of portable equipment using coin cell batteries are challenged by system level energy budget considerations, mainly driven by MCU and RF current consumption, as well as by the capacity and specification limits battery manufacturers provide. This report shows that adding a capacitor in parallel with a CR2032 coin cell is the most effective choice a designer can make to maximize battery capacity utilization in low power RF applications (more than 40% improvement with poor quality CR2032s). The test results also show that using 30mA peak current versus 15mA peak current only slightly reduce the effective capacity of a CR2032 (9% on average depending on vendor). These observations are valid across all six coin cell vendors tested, and implies that minimizing average current is the key to achieving long battery life with CR2032s

AN092 Measuring Bluetooth Low Energy Power Consumption

The Bluetooth® low energy standard was developed with long battery life in mind, allowing for devices that can last anywhere from several months to several years while operating on a single coin-cell battery. This application note describes the setup and procedures to measure power consumption on the CC2540 device operating as a GAP “Peripheral” in a BLE connection.

AN082 One way and two way audio communications using the CC1110 or CC2510 and the TLV320AIC26 Codec

This application note has been updated to fully detail the possible sample-rate and ADC resolution options for one-way and two-way voice-quality wireless audio communications using CC2510 or CC1110 system-on-chip devices and external codecs. The example software included with the application note can support up to a 16-kHz sampling rate with 16 bits resolution (compressed) or 12-kHz/16-bits uncompressed for two-way communication and 24-kHz sampling with 16 bits resolution for one-way communication.

Radiocrafts releases new KNX-RF radio module

Radiocrafts has launched the new compact KNX-RF module, named RC1180-KNX1. The RC1180-KNX1 is the market’s smallest module based on the worldwide KNX standard for home and building control, and represents the first module in Radiocrafts’ KNX-RF series. As a member of the KNX association, Radiocrafts is working closely with the association to enable manufacturers of wired KNX products to develop wireless products compliant with the KNX-RF standard. Radiocrafts’ KNX-RF module conforms to the EN 50090 (ISO/IEC 14543-3) standard and uses a chipset solution from Texas Instruments that has already been successfully implemented in Radiocrafts’ wireless MBUS product series.
Meet with the Radiocrafts team at electronica 2010, stand # A4.565.
