Google announces support for Bluetooth® low energy coming in 2 months |
|
At the Google I/O in May, Google announced support for Bluetooth® low energy (Bluetooth® 4.0/Bluetooth® Smart/BLE) coming in two short months with the release of Android API version 18.
Texas Instruments has been supporting Bluetooth® low energy since 2009 with the release of the CC2540 and was the first company to show Bluetooth® low energy support with the iOS platform when iPhone4S was released at the end of 2011. Earlier this year TI released the $25 SensorTag kit, a development platform for the growing app developer/appcessory community. The SensorTag allows app developers to develop accessory to smartphone/tablets without the need for any embedded software knowledge and is packed with 6 MEMS sensors (Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Infrared Thermopile Sensor, Humidity, Pressure and Magnetometer) running on a single coin cell battery. Now one can see several apps in AppStore developed using the SensorTag platform, such as the Weight Training-Genie and Gammapoint's Weather Run - Bike, Walk, Hike Tracker.
Texas Instruments will support Android once Android API version 18 is released, and we will upgrade our SensorTag kit to include an Android app support to further help speed up the development of new Bluetooth® Smart appcessories. Stay tuned. |
