Glossary of Terms for Embedded Processor Module & Single Board Computer Selection Tool
SOM –
System on Module. It is a small footprint board that has a mezzanine input/output connector, which mates it with an applications or mother board.
A SOM contains at least a processor, memory, and power management components and is typically used for development, pilot and production volumes
up to thousands of units.
SBC –
Single Board Computer. Form factors differ to suit the end-equipment. It combines the functionality of a SOM and applications/mother board into one board. SBCs typically have no external bus connectors, apart from the Human Machine Interface. All I/O driver functionality is on-board with sensor/display on or off-board. Typically used for development, pilot and production volumes up to thousands of units.
ATCA –
"Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture". It is a set of standards used heavily in communications equipment such as rack systems – rows of SBCs with external bus connectors that slide into a common chassis.
Max NAND –
The maximum size of NAND flash memory supported by this board.
Max NOR –
The maximum size of NOR flash memory supported by this board.
Direct Support –
