Voice over IP (VoIP) Solutions: Solution Density

clear gif

The most important consideration facing toll-quality VoIP equipment manufacturers is that their solution offers the lowest power and smallest area without compromising voice quality and features. In this regard, solution density—as opposed to just channel density—is critical. Some solutions actually define themselves based only on raw numbers of channels. In reality, developing a high quality VoIP solution is much more complex.

Solution density refers to optimizing area per channel, power consumption, architecture and cost to support the features required by OEMs producing true toll quality VoIP gateways. It is important to normalize the data in terms of milli-Watts per channel and channels per square inch. This includes not only the access communications processor but the impact on power, area and cost when external logic that may be required—such as external RAM and aggregation logic—is factored in.

Our record speaks for itself. Some of the networking industry's most recognized names, including 3Com, Alcatel, Cisco Systems, Ericsson, Lucent, Nortel Networks and Siemens, have nearly 200 products using TI’s programmable DSPs and Telogy Software® for VoIP. Our low power, high density solutions have made TI the undisputed leader in carrier-class VoIP.
