OMAP™ 2 Platform
The OMAP™ 2 platform from Texas Instruments offers stunning game and graphical performance. Huge performance and feature-set differentiation means that any OMAP 2 platform-based handset will stand above the rest. Manufacturers will be in a position to carve out new market segments in high-end gaming, based on premium performance and unmatched quality. Additionally, 3D user interfaces can augment 3D audio for the ultimate gaming experience.
TI offers several 3D graphics accelerated processors in the OMAP platform to improve the quality of mobile games:
- OMAP2420 – the first true applications processor to have an integrated 3D engine – the PowerVR® MBX and VGP. Capable of sustained throughput up to 2 million polygons/sec and with a feature set seen previously only in consoles, this device offers a huge step-up in capability.
- OMAP2430 – is the second in the OMAP 2 processor family sporting the MBX Lite and VGP Lite. While the OMAP2430 offers cost effectiveness, its graphic specifications deliver a high-end graphics platform.
Both OMAP processors are OpenGL® ES1.1 and OpenVG™ 1.0 compatible. There is also a range of extensions from Texture Compression through Vertex Shading to Texture Streaming that take the capabilities of the device way beyond the original Khronos OpenGL ES specification.
OMAP™ 3 Platform
The recently announced OMAP3430 processor in the OMAP 3 family delivers two major improvements over the OMAP 2 platform including the ARM Cortex™ A8 core which can deliver up to 3x performance over the ARM11™ core in the OMAP 2 platform. This enables a large range of complexity for running games and graphics.
TI Gaming Platform
To further enhance game development on the OMAP architecture, TI is building an OMAP processor-based Gaming Platform. This platform encompasses a tools chain and a software stack that supports game development on Symbian OS™, Linux and Windows Mobile®.
Manufacturers can leverage the pre-integration effort of TI in their phones and gain advantage from the middleware and tools that we are integrating from Ideaworks3D. This tools chain and abstraction layer enables developers to target any or all of the three HLOSes without the need for three separate code lines. This increases overall efficiency for the developer and offers a larger target market for developers and content owners.
Handset manufacturers will be able to:
- Leverage the gaming community to enable developer communities on their own platform incorporating partner SDKs and potentially having partners running and managing communities for them.
- Take advantage of high quality content already available at phone launch (or possibly embedded) – the most important time in their cycle. TI provides the Gaming Platform Development Environment well in advance of phone launches.
