Award Honors Outstanding Environmental, Health and Safety Achievement
in the Semiconductor Industry
TOKYO, Japan (December 4, 2007) – Richard (Rich) K. Templeton,
president and chief executive officer of Texas Instruments Incorporated,
is the recipient of the Akira Inoue Award for outstanding achievement
in environment, health and safety (EHS) in the semiconductor industry.
The award is sponsored by SEMI and will be presented tomorrow evening
in Tokyo at the SEMICON Japan President's Reception.
Templeton
is recognized for his contributions to EHS leadership at Texas Instruments,
which has resulted in the introduction of innovative environmentally-friendly
products and processes and operational excellence in health and safety
for employees. Templeton is the eighth recipient of the prestigious industry
award.

recognize Rich Templeton for EHS leadership. Under his direction, TI has
made a priority of reducing air emissions, energy consumption, water use
and waste while increasing resource conservation and energy efficiency,”
said Stanley Myers, president and CEO of SEMI. “His commitment to
EHS has led to outstanding achievements at Texas Instruments and throughout
the industry."
Templeton's
commitment led to achievements at Texas Instruments and industry-wide.
Those cited by the Akira Inoue Award committee in the selection of Mr.
Templeton include:
- TI built
the world’s first “green” semiconductor manufacturing
facility.
- TI achieved
the best safety rate in the company’s history and the best safety
rate in the U.S. semiconductor industry for past three consecutive years.
- TI is
leading the industry in providing digital and analog solutions with
low power consumption and greater energy efficiency.
- TI received
numerous awards and recognitions for outstanding EHS performance and
environmental stewardship from customers, media and government organizations.
Rich Templeton
has been president and chief executive officer of Texas Instruments since
May 2004. He also serves on the company’s board of directors, to
which he was elected in July 2003. Previously, Templeton was chief operating
officer and executive vice president of the company and president of TI's
Semiconductor business. He is credited with helping to define and execute
TI’s strategy to focus on semiconductors for signal processing.
Templeton joined the company in 1980 after earning a bachelor’s
of science degree in electrical engineering from Union College in New
York. Templeton is also the immediate past chairman of the Semiconductor
Industry Association.
The Akira
Inoue Award is sponsored by the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS)
Division of SEMI. The award is named after the late Akira Inoue, past
president of Tokyo Electron Limited and a strong advocate of the environment,
health and safety. Inoue also served on the SEMI Board of Directors. The
award recognizes individuals in industry and academia who have made significant
contributions to this area by exercising leadership or demonstrating innovation
in the development of processes, products or materials that reduce EHS
impacts.
Past recipients
of the Akira Inoue Award include Pasquale Pistorio, former CEO of STMicroelectronics;
Craig Barrett, former CEO of Intel Corporation; Farhang Shadman, director
of the Engineering and Research Center for Environmentally Benign Semiconductor
Manufacturing at the University of Arizona; Saburo Kusama, president of
Epson Corp.; Isao Uchigasaki, chairman of the board of Hitachi Chemical
Company; Gerald Ermentrout, vice president and general manager of the
Electronics Division of Air Products; and Chang-Gyu Hwang, president and
CEO of the Semiconductor Business of Samsung Electronics.
