Common applications and features of the shift registers portfolio

Increase the number of outputs on a microcontroller

There are often not enough general-purpose input/output (GPIO) pins on a microcontroller to write to multiple sensors or LEDs. A serial-input, parallel-output shift register can write out the same number of outputs with fewer GPIO pins on the microcontroller.

Increase the number of inputs on a microcontroller

There are often not enough general-purpose input/output (GPIO) pins on a microcontroller to read in multiple sensors. A parallel input, serial output shift register can read in the same number of inputs with fewer GPIO pins on the microcontroller.

Reduce noise impact

Our high-speed CMOS with Schmitt-trigger (HCS) family performs over a 2V-to-6V input voltage range. Schmitt-trigger inputs decipher clean signals in 3.3V and 5V applications with high noise, and increase slow signal performance by sharpening logic-level transitions.

Reduce Noise and Save Power with the New HCS Logic Family (Rev. A)
Designers are continuously striving to improve signal integrity, reduce power, and increase reliability in their systems. TI designed its next-generation Schmitt-trigger integrated high-speed CMOS family to achieve these goals.

Understanding Schmitt Triggers (Rev. A)
Most CMOS, BiCMOS and TTL devices require fast edges on the high and low transitions of their inputs. If the edges are too slow, they can cause excessive current or oscillation, or may damage the device.

Optimize board size with cost-efficient solutions

The small-outline transistor thin (SOT-23-THN) DYY package is a discrete logic leaded package measuring 4.2mm by 3.26mm, which is 57% smaller than the thin shrink small-outline package (TSSOP) equivalent. The DYY package's standard 0.5mm pitch enables easy integration into existing manufacturing equipment.

The very very quad flat no-lead (WQFN) BQA 14-pin logic quad flat no-lead (QFN) package measures 3mm by 2.5mm, which is 76% smaller than the TSSOP equivalent and 40% smaller than the previous-generation QFN package. This package also comes in wettable-flank configurations to enable optical inspection rather than traditional X-ray inspection during manufacturing.
